In 2021, Ryan Brandt, a server at Oven & Tap in Arkansas, received a generous $4,400 tip after serving a large party of over 40 business professionals. The patrons intended for Brandt and a colleague to share the tip equally.
However, restaurant management instructed Brandt to surrender the tip for redistribution among all staff, a policy she claimed was unprecedented in her three years of employment there. After returning the tip to the patrons, who then gave it directly to her, Brandt was terminated from her position.
The restaurant’s owners stated that her dismissal was unrelated to the tipping incident but did not provide further details, citing personnel privacy.
