Scarlett Johansson Will Never Do This ‘One Thing’

In a world obsessed with social media, Scarlett Johansson defies the norm by refusing to join platforms like Instagram—even for movie promotions. Despite Universal Pictures urging her to create an account for Jurassic World: Rebirth, the actress declined, staying true to her belief that social media isn’t for her. Johansson has long avoided online platforms, citing anxiety and discomfort. Yet, her thriving career and business ventures prove success doesn’t require digital presence.

Why She’s Staying Offline Despite Industry Pressure

In an era where social media dominates celebrity culture, Scarlett Johansson remains an outlier. While many A-listers actively use platforms like Instagram to engage with fans and promote their projects, the Black Widow star refuses to join the trend—even when major studios ask her to. Recently, Johansson revealed that Universal Pictures had encouraged her to create an Instagram account to help market her upcoming film, Jurassic World: Rebirth. However, she turned down the request, staying true to her long-standing belief that social media isn’t for her.

This isn’t the first time she’s spoken about her aversion to online platforms. In past interviews, she has admitted that social media makes her anxious and that she once attempted to use Instagram, only to delete it within days. Despite being the co-founder of a beauty brand, The Outset, she still prefers to stay offline, making only rare appearances on the brand’s official account. So why does one of Hollywood’s biggest stars reject social media? And how does she navigate the entertainment and business industries without it? Here’s a closer look at Johansson’s reasoning, her brief experiment with Instagram, and why she believes Jurassic World: Rebirth doesn’t need her online presence to succeed.

Staying True To Herself

Scarlett Johansson has never been one to follow the crowd, and that includes social media. The actress, 40, recently revealed in an interview with InStyle that she declined a request from Universal Pictures to join Instagram in order to promote her upcoming film, Jurassic World: Rebirth. I mean, even today, I got an email from Universal, and they’re like, ‘Hey, would you consider joining Instagram in tandem with the release of Jurassic World: Rebirth Johansson shared. But despite mounting pressure, she stood firm in her decision.

Why Social Media Isn’t For Her

Johansson admitted that she frequently questions whether she could engage with social media while staying authentic to herself. However, after much reflection, she concluded that it just wasn’t for her. “I get a lot of pressure to join social media,” she said. “It makes me wonder, Is there a way I could do this and stay true to who I am? It didn’t feel like I could.” Her reasoning is simple—she doesn’t want to fake enthusiasm for something she doesn’t genuinely enjoy. “The work that I put out there is all based in truth. That’s the key ingredient,” she explained. “So if I was a person who really enjoyed social media, then I could totally get on the bandwagon. But I’m not. And I think the film will do fine.”
