On February 22, 2025, a knife attack occurred in Mulhouse, France, resulting in the death of one individual and injuries to at least two others. The assailant, a 37-year-old Algerian man known to French anti-terrorism authorities, was apprehended at the scene. French President Emmanuel Macron described the incident as an “Islamist terrorist act,” and the national anti-terrorism prosecutor’s office has taken over the investigation.

The attack took place around 4:00 PM local time during a demonstration in the city center. Among the victims was a 69-year-old Portuguese man who succumbed to his injuries. Two municipal police officers sustained serious injuries, while two parking control officers were also wounded. Witnesses reported that the attacker shouted “Allahu Akbar” during the assault.

The suspect was reportedly under judicial supervision and house arrest, with an existing expulsion order from France. Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau visited the scene following the attack. Local authorities have expressed their condolences to the victims and their families, condemning the act of violence.

This incident adds to a series of attacks in France and neighboring countries in recent months, heightening concerns about Islamist extremism in the region.
