When Barajas learned about Kayak’s heartbreaking start in life, she was deeply moved. “My first reaction was I wanted to cry,” she admitted. “I could not understand why somebody would do that.” Once the adoption was finalized, Kayak rode home next to Ryanne’s car seat, as if he already understood he was safe. Upon arriving at their apartment, he settled in immediately, embracing his new environment with a sense of security he had never known before.
A Happy Ending And A Message Of Hope
Kayak now enjoys all the comforts of a loving home. He instinctively knew how to play fetch, quickly bonded with his new family, and even shares a princess loft bed with Ryanne each night. The only thing he dislikes? Baths—which isn’t surprising, given his history with water. Despite her anger at whoever abandoned Kayak in the river, Barajas is overwhelmingly grateful to the kind strangers who saved his life and wishes she could thank them personally. “This couple, whoever they were, drove two hours to take him to Austin Pets Alive! I wish I could thank them.”
Kayak is one of nearly 1,000 puppies treated for parvo each year by APA!, a reminder of the importance of animal rescue efforts. Barajas encourages others to consider adoption, emphasizing that there is a perfect pet out there for every family.
“There is a dog there for each family—I promise you. “As the holidays approach, some shelters even offer waived or reimbursed adoption fees to encourage pet adoption. Ultimately, giving a rescue pet a forever home can be one of the most rewarding experiences.
“It seems like Kayak is very grateful to be in a home—not in the water, not in a box, and not in a shelter,” Barajas shared. “You can just tell that he is so grateful to be with us.” Kayak’s journey from abandonment to a warm, loving home is a powerful testament to the impact of kindness, resilience, and second chances.
