Imagine being a tiny puppy, just two months old, abandoned and left to drift down a river in a sealed box. That was the grim reality for Kayak, a black Labrador retriever mix, who faced near-certain death until fate intervened. His remarkable journey from despair to a loving home is a testament to human kindness and resilience.
A Near-Tragic Beginning

On October 3rd, two good Samaritans spotted a box floating down a Texas river. Curious and concerned, they pulled it out, only to discover a frail, underweight puppy inside. Without hesitation, they rushed him to the nearest animal shelter. Unfortunately, their relief was short-lived—shelter staff diagnosed the pup with canine parvovirus, a highly contagious and often deadly disease. With no available treatment at that location, the couple refused to give up on him. Instead, they drove two hours to Austin Pets Alive! (APA!), a nonprofit, no-kill animal shelter specializing in treating parvo cases.
Fighting For Survival

When Kayak arrived at APA!, he was in critical condition. Weighing only 16 pounds, he was lethargic, dehydrated, and on the verge of collapse. Shelter staff immediately administered lifesaving fluids and began an aggressive treatment regimen. The next day, he had already gained over two pounds—a promising sign of his resilience. Parvovirus is particularly dangerous for unvaccinated puppies. It causes severe vomiting, diarrhea, and dehydration, making survival without intensive medical intervention unlikely. Fortunately, APA!’s Parvo ICU boasts a survival rate of around 90%, and Kayak was given every chance to fight. Over the next several days, he received round-the-clock care, slowly regaining his strength.
A New Lease On Life

After successfully overcoming parvo, Kayak was placed in a wing of the shelter for adoptable puppies. One day, Austin resident Ascencia Barajas visited the facility with her 3-year-old daughter, Ryanne. As they walked past the kennels, most puppies jumped and barked for attention—except for one. Kayak remained calm and observant, his floppy ears framing his sweet, patient face.
Ryanne was instantly drawn to him. Unlike the other dogs, Kayak didn’t bark or jump in excitement; instead, he simply sat and gazed at her with quiet curiosity. That connection was all it took—Barajas knew he was the perfect fit for their family.
