James Cameron Reveals Avatar 3 Was Split from Avatar 2 Due to Overflow of Ideas

The third chapter of the Avatar saga, officially titled Avatar: Fire and Ash, is set to hit theaters on December 19, 2025. In a recent chat with Empire, director James Cameron opened up about how he and his writing team had so many great ideas for Avatar: The Way of Water that they had no choice but to split the story into two separate films. The upcoming Fire and Ash was penned by Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, the duo famous for their work on the Planet of the Apes series. They were joined by Josh Friedman, who’s currently working on Avatar 4, and Shane Salerno, lined up to write Avatar 5.

Bringing New Characters to Life

Empire also dropped some stunning new concept art, including an image of Lo’ak riding an ilu through crystal-clear waters. In her interview, Amanda Silver, who co-wrote the film with her husband Jaffa, shared a glimpse into the emotional process of developing these characters. It was amazing,” Silver said. “You spend days and days digging deep into who these characters are, and then suddenly, there they are—fully formed.”Cameron added that many of the characters were shaped by personal life experiences.

“These characters are really pieces of us—our childhoods, our parenting, our mistakes, and probably the mistakes we’re still making,” he shared. “Jake’s a tough father. He’s really hard on his kids. And, well, that’s me.” Backing up Cameron’s point, Jaffa mentioned how real-life relationships made their way into the script. “An old friend of mine, a woman I grew up with, reached out after watching The Way of Water. She told me the bond between Lo’ak and Neteyam reminded her of my relationship with my older brother.”

A Longer Journey Ahead with Avatar: Fire and Ash

If you thought Avatar: The Way of Water was long at three hours and twelve minutes, get ready—Cameron says the next film will run even longer. “Movie 3 is actually going to be a bit longer than Movie 2,” he revealed.Silver emphasized that giving the characters time to develop was crucial. “These stories aren’t just about fast-moving plots and stunning visuals. The characters need space to breathe—they feel real.”

And given that The Way of Water managed to rake in a staggering $2.32 billion worldwide, making it the third highest-grossing film ever, it’s safe to say audiences are willing to sit through a longer journey through Pandora. Now, with Fire and Ash set to become the longest entry in the series, fans are surely hoping those extra minutes will be time well spent in Cameron’s awe-inspiring world.

Avatar 3 promises to be just as epic, with a runtime that’s expected to be even longer than Avatar 2’s 3 hours and 12 minutes. The film will introduce new cultures and regions of Pandora, taking the story in unexpected directions. As Jack Champion, who stars in the film, put it, Avatar 3 takes a “hard left turn” that will surprise audiences. James Cameron’s dedication to world-building and storytelling ensures that the sequel will be a visually stunning and immersive experience. The film’s themes of family, identity, and environmentalism will continue to resonate with viewers.
