A common phenomenon observed by healthcare workers, especially those in end-of-life care, is a sudden burst of energy in patients just days before they pass away. This temporary surge, which can last anywhere from a few minutes to several hours, often involves increased wakefulness, appetite, or communication.
While this may seem like a sign of recovery, experts like nurse Ruby Gramlow urge families to understand that it typically signals the final stage of life, not improvement.

In cases of Alzheimer’s or dementia, this phenomenon, known as terminal lucidity, can include moments where patients regain lost memories or cognitive abilities. While it can be confusing or hopeful for family members, Gramlow stresses the importance of being present and emotionally supportive, helping both the patient and their loved ones prepare for what’s to come.
